Management Team


Chimerix is led by a veteran team with deep experience and a successful track record in the discovery and development of novel therapeutics, and specifically, in medicines that treat viral and infectious diseases. Collectively, members of the team have participated in the filing of more than 40 Investigational New Drug (IND) applications and more than 20 New Drug Applications (NDA) with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.


Kenneth I. Moch

President and CEO

Kenneth Moch joined Chimerix in 2009 as Chief Operating Officer and was named President and CEO in April 2010. He brings more than 30 years of experience in managing and financing biomedical technologies, having played a key role in building several life science companies. Prior to joining Chimerix, Mr. Moch founded Euclidean Life Science Advisors, a provider of strategic advisory services to life sciences companies, where he most recently served as President and CEO of BioMedical Enterprises, Inc. Previously, he was Managing Director, Healthcare Investment Banking, at ThinkEquity Partners. From 1998 to 2005, Mr. Moch served as President and CEO of Alteon Inc., a biotechnology company specializing in small molecule therapeutics for cardiovascular aging and diabetic complications, having joined in 1995 as SVP, Finance and Business Development & CFO. As President and CEO of the cellular therapy company Biocyte Corporation, Mr. Moch pioneered the storage and therapeutic use of cord blood stem cells and launched the first cord blood stem cell bank. Previously, he was a co-founder and Vice President of The Liposome Company, Inc., and a management consultant with McKinsey & Company, Inc.

Mr. Moch is a past Chairman of the Biotechnology Council of New Jersey and currently serves on the Emerging Companies Section Governing Board of the Biotechnology Industry Organization. He is a member of the Board of Directors of M2Gen/Moffitt Genetics Corporation, a for-profit partnership between Merck and the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer & Research Institute. Mr. Moch holds an A.B. in biochemistry from Princeton University and an MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.


George Painter, Ph.D.

Founder and Chief Scientific Officer

With over 31 years of experience and a track record of successful antiviral therapeutic development, George Painter, Chief Scientific Officer, helps lead the Chimerix team in advancing a world-class antiviral pipeline.  Dr. Painter served as the President and CEO of Chimerix from 2002 until April 2010. Prior to joining Chimerix, he held the position of Executive Vice President, Research and Development, at Triangle Pharmaceuticals, where he was a member of the founding management team.  Previously, he served as Director of Research Process and International Deputy Therapeutic Head for Antiviral Research at Glaxo Wellcome Inc.  In addition, Dr. Painter held positions at Burroughs Wellcome Co., including Director of Chemistry and Director of Virology.  Dr. Painter is a co-inventor on over forty-five patents, six of which have led to approved commercially-available drugs or combinations of drugs for the treatment of HIV and hepatitis B.  He has led international teams which generated data for nine investigational new drug applications and three new drug applications.  Dr. Painter earned a B.S. in chemistry, an M.S. in physical organic chemistry and a Ph.D. in synthetic chemistry from Emory University.


Gwendolyn P. Painter, M.D., MPH

Chief Medical Officer

Wendy Painter was named Chief Medical Officer of Chimerix in 2009 and has been working with Chimerix since 2002 in a consulting capacity.  In this capacity, she has provided medical oversight and clinical consulting to the company’s development efforts.  Dr. Painter has 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, including work in clinical development, clinical safety and pharmacovigilance, occupational and environmental medicine.  Prior to her current role, she served as Medical Director at GlaxoSmithKline where she had responsibility for worldwide antiviral clinical safety, and was involved in a number of antiviral IND and NDA submissions.  Dr. Painter earned an M.S. in organic chemistry at Emory University and an M.D. degree at the University Of Miami School Of Medicine.  She later obtained an MPH in epidemiology at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and completed a fellowship in occupational medicine at Duke University, where she maintains an academic appointment.


Timothy W. Trost

Sr. Vice President, Chief Financial Officer

With more than 30 years of experience working in the financial field Timothy W. Trost joined Chimerix in 2011 as Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer. In this newly-created position, Mr. Trost will be responsible for overseeing the company’s financial operations. Prior to joining Chimerix, Mr. Trost was Vice President and CFO at Argos Therapeutics, Inc., a venture-backed immunotherapy company located in Research Triangle Park. Previously, he was Senior Vice President and CFO at InteCardia, Inc., a venture-backed cardiac imaging company. While at InteCardia, Mr. Trost played a key role in negotiating and executing the sale of the company to Syncor International Corporation (NASDAQ: SCOR). Prior to InteCardia, Mr. Trost served as Executive Vice President and CFO of Coastal Physician Group, Inc. (NYSE: DR), a contract provider of emergency room physicians, having joined the company as Vice President of Corporate Development. He also held the positions of Vice President of Finance at Morganite North America, Inc., and Senior Manager at Price Waterhouse. Mr. Trost holds a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is a Certified Public Accountant.


Hervé Momméja-Marin, M.D.

Vice President, Clinical Research

With over 20 years of global medical and clinical research experience in infectious and respiratory disease and clinical medicine, Dr. Momméja-Marin joined Chimerix as Vice President, Clinical Research in 2010. Most recently he was Senior Medical Director, Infectious Diseases, for i3 Research, a contract research organization, where he was the lead therapeutic expert in infectious diseases. His background includes numerous Phase I through Phase IV clinical trials, including more than 25 late-stage trials. Previously, Dr. Momméja-Marin was Director of Clinical Research for Gilead Sciences, Inc., where he was responsible for the global development of hepatitis B and hepatitis C programs. He also held the positions of Clinical Research Physician at Triangle Pharmaceuticals and Physician of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Assistance Publique- Hôpitaux de Paris in France. Dr. Momméja-Marin received a medical degree from Paris VII University, France. He is certified in internal medicine and multiple subspecialties.


Jung E. Choi

Senior Vice President, Corporate Development

Jung E. Choi is currently the Senior VP of Corporate Development at Chimerix. She is the former Senior Director of Corporate Development at Gilead Sciences, and was responsible for worldwide business development, licensing, and mergers and acquisition activities for the company. Ms. Choi had played a leading role in Gilead's numerous in-licensing and out-licensing transactions and M&A. Example transactions include the in-licensing of novel HCV compounds with Achillion Pharmaceuticals, in-licensing of novel HIV compounds with Japan Tobacco, the in-licensing of novel HCV compounds with Genelabs, commercial partnership of Gilead's HBV compound, Hepsera, with GlaxoSmithKline, and the divestiture of Gilead's oncology portfolio to OSI Pharmaceuticals. Ms. Choi was previously Director of Hepatitis Marketing, where she led the U.S. commercial launch of Hepsera. Prior to Gilead, Ms. Choi was Vice President at Bay City Capital, a life sciences venture capital firm, where she invested in private biotech companies. She was also an Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Company, where she consulted to biopharmaceutical companies. She has over 15 years of biopharmaceutical transactional and operational experience. Ms. Choi has an undergraduate degree in Human Biology from Stanford University, and a MBA Masters of Business Administration from Stanford University.


J. Michael Grindel, Ph.D.

Head, Development & Program Management

Dr. Grindel is the Head of Development and Program Management at Chimerix. Throughout his career, he has been responsible for the development, direction and management of drug development projects, strategic planning processes and departments. His skills are in the transfer of projects from research to clinical development and the overall development of projects to commercial realization. Formerly a consultant, he also spent eighteen years within the pharmaceutical sector of Johnson & Johnson in various management and executive positions, including oversight of Project Portfolios at J&J in Cancer, Hematology, Anti-Infectives. Mike has over 25 years of international drug development experience. He has held executive management positions in R&D in both large and small pharmaceutical and biotech organizations. Dr. Grindel joined CytRx in October 1997 as Vice President, Drug Development. From 1994 to 1997 Dr. Grindel served as Vice President, Preclinical Development for Hybridon, Inc. in Cambridge, MA. From 1989 to 1994 Dr. Grindel was Vice President for Project Planning and Management at the R. W. Johnson Pharmaceutical Research Institute (a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson) in Raritan, NJ. Prior to that Dr. Grindel served in various research and development management positions with McNeil Pharmaceutical from 1976 to 1989 and the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research from 1973 to 1976.
