James Niedel is a Managing Director of New Leaf Venture Partners, a healthcare technology fund, where he focuses on biopharmaceutical investments. He was one of the founders of New Leaf in 2005, having moved with the healthcare team from Sprout, where he had been a venture partner since 2002. Prior to joining the venture industry, Dr. Niedel was Chief Science and Technology Officer for GlaxoSmithKline and from 1995 to 2001 he was a member of the board of directors of Glaxo Wellcome plc with responsibility for Global Research and Development, Information Technology and Product Strategy. From 1988 to 1995, he was VP Research and SVP R&D for the US subsidiary of Glaxo. Before joining the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Niedel was Professor of Medicine and Chief of the division of Clinical Pharmacology at Duke Medical School, where he had completed an Internal Medicine residency and a Hematology-Oncology fellowship. At Duke, he directed a basic research laboratory studying signal transduction, was an editor of J. Biological Chemistry, J. Immunology, Blood and J. Leukocyte Biology and was selected a Searle Scholar. He received M.D. and Ph.D. (Biochemistry) degrees from the University of Miami and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London).
Farah Champsi joined Alta in 2000, prior to the formation of Alta BioPharma II. She is currently on the board of directors of Aerovance, Chimerix, Excaliard Pharmaceuticals, Portola Pharmaceuticals, Trevena and Zelos Therapeutics. Farah also led Alta’s investments in Achaogen, Agensys, Cytokinetics, Esperion, Orphan Medical and Renovis. She focuses her efforts on biopharmaceutical and medical technology companies.
Prior to Alta, Ms. Champsi was an investment banker at Robertson Stephens & Company between 1987 and 1999, where she focused on biotechnology and other life sciences companies. She was elected a General Partner in 1992 and head of the global life sciences investment banking group in 1995. During that time, she was responsible for building one of the most successful life sciences investment banking franchises on Wall Street.
She holds a Master of Business Administration from Stanford University and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Smith College.
Martha Demski joined the Board of Chimerix in 2005 and currently serves as Chair of the Audit Committee. She has over 30 years of experience in the fields of finance and biotechnology. Ms. Demski currently serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Althea Technologies, a fully-integrated contract development and manufacturing organization. From 2008-2010, Ms. Demski served as the Interim Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer of the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center (SKCC) a non-profit corporation engaged in biomedical research. At SKCC she served on the Board of Trustees from 2005 to 2008 as well as Chair of the Audit Committee and Chair of the Governance and Nominating Committee. From 2006-2008, Ms. Demski was a Senior Vice President with U.S. Trust Private Wealth Management. She served from 1988 to 2004 as Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, Treasurer and Secretary of Vical Incorporated. At Vical, Ms. Demski created the finance department and was responsible for multiple private and public financings, including Vical's IPO in 1993. Before joining Vical, Ms. Demski was a Vice President and Section Manager with Bank of America from 1977 to 1988 with expertise in financing the corporate lending/leasing needs of biotech and other client companies. From 2006 to 2009, Ms. Demski served on the Finance and Audit Committees of the San Diego Foundation. She holds an M.B.A from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business, and a B.A. from Michigan State University.
Seasoned healthcare investor Wende Hutton is passionate about identifying, investing in and building companies that are revolutionizing the practice of medicine. She joined Canaan in 2004, bringing diverse expertise from across the entire medical spectrum. Over the last 18 years, Wende has facilitated the market entrance of over 11 novel and lifesaving medical devices, new drugs and diagnostics. Her track record is a testament to her leadership and includes the initial public offerings of five companies, of which two were later acquired, and the acquisition of four more by medical companies including the recent acquisition of BiPar Sciences, a leader in the development of a potential new class of tumor-selective drugs designed to meet the unmet needs of cancer patients. Wende began her venture career at Mayfield Fund in 1993, where she was a General Partner in the life sciences group until 2001. During her tenure at Mayfield, Wende incubated Heartstream Inc. (HPQ) and Northstar Neuroscience Inc. (NSTR), working closely with those founding teams. Most recently, she was a General Partner at Spring Ridge Ventures, a healthcare-focused seed fund. Earlier in her career, Wende held senior operational management positions at GenPharm International and Nellcor in business development and marketing.

Wende holds an AB in human biology from Stanford University and an MBA from Harvard Business School, where she was a Baker Scholar. She is active with several community service groups including serving on the board of FACE AIDS and in leadership roles with the National Charity League Stanford chapter. Beyond her community service involvements, Wende's first love is a field biology hike or lecture.
Kenneth Moch joined Chimerix in 2009 as Chief Operating Officer and was named President and CEO in April 2010. He brings more than 30 years of experience in managing and financing biomedical technologies, having played a key role in building several life science companies. Prior to joining Chimerix, Mr. Moch founded Euclidean Life Science Advisors, a provider of strategic advisory services to life sciences companies, where he most recently served as President and CEO of BioMedical Enterprises, Inc. Previously, he was Managing Director, Healthcare Investment Banking, at ThinkEquity Partners. From 1998 to 2005, Mr. Moch served as President and CEO of Alteon Inc., a biotechnology company specializing in small molecule therapeutics for cardiovascular aging and diabetic complications, having joined in 1995 as SVP, Finance and Business Development & CFO. As President and CEO of the cellular therapy company Biocyte Corporation, Mr. Moch pioneered the storage and therapeutic use of cord blood stem cells and launched the first cord blood stem cell bank. Previously, he was a co-founder and Vice President of The Liposome Company, Inc., and a management consultant with McKinsey & Company, Inc.
Mr. Moch is a past Chairman of the Biotechnology Council of New Jersey and currently serves on the Emerging Companies Section Governing Board of the Biotechnology Industry Organization. He is a member of the Board of Directors of M2Gen/Moffitt Genetics Corporation, a for-profit partnership between Merck and the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer & Research Institute. Mr. Moch holds an A.B. in biochemistry from Princeton University and an MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
With over 31 years of experience and a track record of successful antiviral therapeutic development, George Painter, Chief Scientific Officer, helps lead the Chimerix team in advancing a world-class antiviral pipeline. Dr. Painter served as the President and CEO of Chimerix from 2002 until April 2010. Prior to joining Chimerix, he held the position of Executive Vice President, Research and Development, at Triangle Pharmaceuticals, where he was a member of the founding management team. Previously, he served as Director of Research Process and International Deputy Therapeutic Head for Antiviral Research at Glaxo Wellcome Inc. In addition, Dr. Painter held positions at Burroughs Wellcome Co., including Director of Chemistry and Director of Virology. Dr. Painter is a co-inventor on over forty-five patents, six of which have led to approved commercially-available drugs or combinations of drugs for the treatment of HIV and hepatitis B. He has led international teams which generated data for nine investigational new drug applications and three new drug applications. Dr. Painter earned a B.S. in chemistry, an M.S. in physical organic chemistry and a Ph.D. in synthetic chemistry from Emory University.
Arthur M. Pappas has over 30 years of operating experience as a pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry executive and venture capital investor in life science companies. He has assembled a team of investment, biotechnology and medical experts who manage over $350 million and oversee investments in more than 40 portfolio companies. Prior to founding Pappas Ventures in 1994, Mr. Pappas held senior level leadership positions at several multinational pharmaceutical companies, including being the CEO of international operations. In addition to leading operations, he was responsible for the development, licensing and launch of a number of key global products. He was an executive member of the board of directors of Glaxo Holdings plc, for which he was the chief executive responsible for international operations including research, development and manufacturing. Mr. Pappas previously was Vice President of Commercial Operations for Abbott International Ltd., and he held various executive and general management positions with Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals and the Dow Chemical Company, in the United States and internationally. Among the companies for which he currently serves as a director are: Afferent Pharmaceuticals, CardioDx, CeNeRx BioPharma and TyRx Pharma. He was the founding CEO and is currently the chairman of CoLucid Pharmaceuticals.

Art is a decorated Vietnam veteran, having served as an officer in the US Army 101st Airborne Division and the Special Forces.
Tim Wollaeger joined the Chimerix Board in 2002, having co-founded the company and served as Chairman of the Board from 2002 to April 2010. He has nearly 35 years of experience in biotechnology and medical products fields in both corporate management and venture capital. Mr. Wollaeger joined Sanderling in 2002 as a Managing Director and head of the firm's San Diego office. In 1994 prior to joining Sanderling, Mr. Wollaeger founded Kingsbury Capital Partners, a venture capital firm whose investments include Aurora Biosciences, Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Phamis Software, Health Data Sciences, Senomyx, Sub-Q, TKT, Althea and Digirad. Mr. Wollaeger also helped found Columbia Hospital Corporation where he was Senior Vice President. He was a founder and general partner at Biovest, a San Diego based venture capital firm, where he helped found Pyxis, Vical and Biosite. He also worked at Baxter International and Hybritech, Inc., San Diego's first biotechnology company, until their acquisition by Eli Lilly & Co. In San Diego, he was named Entrepreneur of the Year in 1995 and Corporate Director of the Year in 2001. Mr. Wollaeger earned a B.A. in Economics from Yale in 1966, served as an officer in the U.S. Navy for three years, and earned an MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business in 1971.
